Mitigate Cyber Attack Vulnerability During a Pandemic

This is the first time in one hundred years that our world is experiencing the unprecedented event of pandemic. Though not the first, it is happening in a modern era of incredible technology. Unlike the 1918 Flu pandemic, most people around the world have access to incredible amounts of information, up to date news, telemedicine/telework, virtual happy hours and many other uses of information technology. However, this great advancement in society does not come without risk.

Rise in Cyber Crime

The FBI is seeing a spike in cyber crimes reported to its Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. Tonya Ugoretz, the deputy assistant director of the FBI’s Cyber Division, says that the IC3 is receiving between 3,000 and 4,000 cybersecurity complaints each day. Therefore, resulting in a very sharp increase (roughly 400%) from prior to the COVID-19 pandemic when about 1,000 complaints were received daily.

There are a multitude of reasons behind this increase. On one hand, hackers are working on behalf of nations seeking insight on COVID-19 related research. On the other hand, hackers are seeking monetary gain from vulnerable entities. The vulnerable entities may be private businesses moving to telework or health organizations on the frontlines battling COVID-19. Not even large government and world organizations are exempt. Health agencies including the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) have been targeted by hackers in recent weeks.
